  The  NARWHAL CHALLENGE  is the first call for international projects in the Finistère area (Western Brittany) in France. This call for innovative projects has been launched by a collective of 8 organisations representing the area’s key economic and scientific stakeholders as well as its world-renowned research community. Sustainably developing the local maritime economy What? The NARWHAL CHALLENGE seeks to attract project leaders and maritime start-ups from all over the world. The aim is to promote innovative initiatives and to foster the growth of projects with the support of the region’s established stakeholders. The wealth of local networks and the collective momentum that characterise the area make it a region ripe for business development. When and who? Orolia awarded $34m US Army contract for Personnel Recovery Devices

Orolia, a global leader in Resilient Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) solutions, has announced that its subsidiary McMurdo Inc. was awarded a $33,986,800 contract to manufacture Personnel Recovery Devices (PRD) for the US Army.   Their dual-mode, MIL-SPEC Personal Locator Beacon that will be integrated into the Army’s Personnel Recovery Support System (PRSS).   Capable of transmitting both open and secure signals (training-combat dual mode), the PRD will provide alerts and notification if a soldier: is alone in a remote area goes missing is detained is captured The positioning device will optimise successful rescue operations for soldiers in emergency situations through secure enhanced capabilities. France to make waves at Oceanlogy International 2018

The French pavilion organised by Business France , the national agency supporting the international development of the French economy , will play host to 21 exhibitors at Oceanology International 2018 in London on stands J200, K200 and K300, in partnership with Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique and Pôle Mer Méditerranée. The maritime industry is the world’s second largest economic sector, currently worth $1.5 trillion to the global economy, a figure that is set to rise to $3 trillion in 2030 (OECD). Alongside more traditional sectors, new industrial sub-sectors will emerge over the coming decades. They will chiefly revolve around the technologies required to exploit resources, as well as activity monitoring at sea and maritime security of the areas in which they take place. PLANT INTERCLUSTER MEETING 2016 : The largest professional event in the plant production industry

The Plant InterCluster Meeting is an international event organised by QUALIMEDITERRANEE and its partners VEGEPOLYS and TERRALIA. Now in its sixth year, the meeting will take place in Montpellier, France between 19th and 20th September 2016. Participants will include European clusters from Denmark, Spain, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, and Portugal among others as well as representatives from many companies. Organised in the form of workshops, forums, business meetings and presentations, the Plant InterCluster meeting is a chance to create and optimise partnerships on European projects in the plant production industry. Registration for this year’s meeting is open now.              At the PIC Meeting 2016 you will have the opportunity to take part in the following:   BtoB meetings: meet with both future project partners and potential customers in the same place. European workshops: the aim is to develop projects and partnerships in the context of Horizon 2020, the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever, particularly with regards to the societal challenges aspect of the programme (food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine, maritime & inland water research and the bio-economy). SITL Europe 2016 promises a content-rich programme serving transport, freight forwarding and the logistics chain, Paris 22-25 March

The only exhibition in France and internationally to cover all the links in transport, freight forwarding and the logistics chain is SITL Europe 2016, taking place on 22-25 March in Hall 6 of the Parc des Expositions, Paris Nord Villepinte. It is a hub for discussion and discovery on the challenges, trends and innovations in the sector. More than 100 conferences will take place during the exhibition The 2016 conference programme consists of 10 highlighted themes which have been designed and will be chaired by the members of the Strategic Committee, all of whom are logistics, transport and/or supply chain directors of major companies in manufacturing and retail. They will focus on new consumer expectations, sustainable development, the link between industrial logistics and e-commerce, urban logistics, tracking the cold chain, the spare parts supply chain, distribution networks evolution, the digital revolution and the new business of operational excellence. For several years now, an increasing number of special programmes have been developed for SITL Europe: A series of conferences will be opened on 22 March, with the World Transport & Logistics Forum and the bi-annual presentation by the World Bank of their study into logistics competitiveness. Attendees such as Coca-Cola Enterprise, Bolloré Logistics and the start-up Shippeo are representative of the rich variety of the programmes taking place at SITL Europe 2016.   Promoting sustainable logistics Following COP21 in Paris in 2015, sustainable supply chains will be subject to a special focus on the opening day of the exhibition on 22 March, with a conference dedicated to Green Logistics. The conference will feature several programmes aimed at reducing greenhouse gases in transport together with the Fret 21 charter supported by shippers. “With the initiatives of the AUTF, the ADEME and the Ministry for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, this process is in complete synchronisation with our policy of social and environmental responsibility which aims to achieve a reduction by one third of the carbon footprint of our products by 2020. On the basis of voluntary commitments, Fret 21 helps us establish our objectives and provides technical support to measure its impact.”   – Eric   Desbonnets, Logistics and Client Services Director at Coca-Cola Enterprise (where transport represents 6% of the total emissions)   By following a structured process comprising three courses of action, Coca-Cola Enterprise is therefore committed to reducing its transport CO2 emissions by 30%: 1.   The first course of action is to reduce the number of kilometres travelled by moving production closer to demand, knowing that 90% of soft drinks sold in France by Coca-Cola Enterprise are produced within the country.   “ Since 2009, an investment of €265 million to increase production and reduce carbon footprint has resulted in our five national factories producing almost all our packaging. With rigorous stock management, these measures have reduced our average delivery kilometres to 273km. Over half of the journeys are for less than 150km.” 2.    With collaborative approaches developed with clients and suppliers, the second course of action involves optimisation of the lorries used on the road by using techniques such as “back hauling” and “front hauling”, direct delivery and shared services so as to reduce empty kilometres. 3.   Thirdly, an increase in use of alternative transport and fuel such as using LNG vehicles and combined rail-road transport. Gearing up Africa Responding to an increased interest in Africa, on 22-24 March, SITL Europe 2016 is offering a series of conferences dedicated to the logistics challenges on this continent. “With more than a billion inhabitants and a rapidly developing middle class comprising 130 million consumers, Africa offers an exceptional opportunity supported by multi-billion euro investment programmes in all areas of industry and distribution. Burgess Marine banks on Port of Cherbourg to grow its business as it signs synchrolift usage agreement with PNA

Burgess Marine, the UKs largest independent ship repairer, and the Ports of Normandy Authority (PNA) have signed a priority usage agreement for the synchrolift located at the Port of Cherbourg in France for the period running from 29th September 2015 to 31st March 2016.  The first vessel, MV Wight Light, a 63m-long car and passenger ferry ensuring the connection between the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth, was dry-docked on 29th September. MV Wight Light is the first in a series of six vessels belonging to British company Wightlink to be maintained at the Cherbourg site by Burgess Marine, a company specialising in ship maintenance and repair as well as the refitting of passenger ships and yachts. Burgess Marine will also be subcontracting local Cherbourg company Construction métallique de l’Ouest (CMO). At the forefront of specialised marine engineering and bespoke marine fabrication, Burgess Marine is one of the largest independent UK companies in the industry, with 130 employees and a turnover of approximately 33 million euros.  In renting the Cherbourg synchrolift for a long period, the operator, currently undergoing a period of growth, secures the availability of a rare piece of equipment only a few miles from its base in the south of England. The synchrolift, 90m long, 32m wide and with a lifting capacity of 3,000t, offers particular ease of access for refitting operations due to the clear flat area created around the vessel. “This agreement represents significant expansion for us as we continue to grow our business,” says Nick Warren, Managing Director of Burgess Marine. “It will allow us to develop a close and beneficial working relationship with PNA and subcontractors in Cherbourg, as well as develop greater cross Channel links and more potential business opportunities.” Cherbourg: A hub for shipbuilding and repair The signing of this usage agreement validates the investments made by PNA since 2011 and vindicates the efforts of local businesses in their ambition to position the Port Cherbourg as a hub for shipbuilding and repair.  With a pier for a 50t marine travelift, a 300t marine travelift, a 3,000t synchrolift, a technical zone of nearly 1ha and a further 2ha zone for new worksites, the Port of Cherbourg is now able to offer complete and coherent services for managing a wide range of projects.
