European Union lifts ban on import of mangoes from India

Nisha Joglekar - 21-janv.-2015 10:23:10

The European Commission committee meeting in Brussels unanimously voted on Tuesday to lift a ban on mango imports from India. However, the ban on the imports of 4 vegetables – bitter gourd, brinjal, snake gourd and taro will stay for the moment and will be reviewed at a later stage after collecting more evidence. The EU’s ban came into force on May 1 2014 after authorities in Brussels found consignments infested with fruit flies that they feared could damage European salad crops. The commission’s Food and Veterinary Office visited India in September 2014 to inspect pack houses and verify improvement in plant health controls and certification systems. The Food and Veterinary Office in its report agreed that India had taken several measures to guarantee safe exports, including enhancement of the capacity and number of inspecting staff, improvement in infrastructure and implementation of a standard operating procedure. Following this audit, experts from member states proposed to lift the ban on mangoes from India.   The legislation now needs to be formally adopted and published by the European Commission, which should take about a month. The positive vote gives certainty to Indian exporters before the start of the next export season which begins in March.   India is the world’s largest exporter of mangoes, selling between 65000 – 70000 tonnes of all varities out of a total production of 1.5 – 1.6 million tonnes. In 2013-14, India exported mangoes worth USD 50.7 million worldwide, of which USD 8.9 million (nearly 4000 tonnes) were to EU nations.    The EU accounts for more than 50% of total exports of fruits and vegetables from India. The United Kingdom is the main importer, followed by the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.   Source: Economic Times and Business Standard
