Chateau Monconseil-Gazin, whose name dates from a “council” (old French: “conseilh”) held by Charlemagne in the year 804, was built around 1500. Since 1894, five generations of Baudets have succeeded each other to produce wine, although wine has been produced there since Roman times.

After WWII Michel Baudet built up the estate, encouraged by the patronage of the famous wine entrepreneur Alexis Lichine, owner of Médoc classed growths Châteaux Prieuré-Lichine and Lascombes. In the 1960s the neighbouring estate of Chateau Ricaud was added, in addition to the parcel of Gazin. The estate extends to a total of 44 hectares and is run by Jean-Michel Baudet, 5th generation winemaker, who took over from his father Michel Baudet in 1989.

Jean-Michel Baudet is an experienced winemaker who is passionate about sustainable farming. He leads the Bordeaux chapter of TERRA VITIS, the main organisation in France for the promotion of environmentally friendly wine production.

The vineyards are situated atop the limestone escarpment on the Right Bank opposite Margaux. The hill and slopes give excellent sun exposure, whilst the clay-limestone soils give good drainage and deep rooting systems. Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc accompany white varieties Sauvignon and Semillon.

The estate wins many medals for its wines, and Jean-Michel has been cited as “One of the Stars of the Appellation” by the top French wine magazine La Revue du Vin de France.
