Saint-Gobain’s First Multi Comfort House in the Middle East Breaks Ground at Masdar City

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, May 13, 2018: French multinational Saint-Gobain has broken ground on its first Multi Comfort House in the Middle East at Masdar City, Abu Dhabi’s flagship sustainable urban community. In the presence of HE Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment and Ludovic Pouille, French Ambassador to the UAE, Pierre-André de Chalendar, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Saint-Gobain, and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company), conducted today’s foundation stone laying ceremony. The Multi Comfort House at Masdar City is one of 30 similar projects around the world. It is the first in the Middle East and a hot region anywhere in the world. On completion at the end of next year, it will demonstrate Saint-Gobain’s patented technology aimed at improving health and well-being by optimizing the human experience within the built environment. ALSOLEN®: Fresnel mirror solar power plants providing utilities

United Arab Emirates; December 2014 - ALSOLEN is a French designer and manufacturer of concentrating solar power plants. The company will exhibit its products at the WFES & IWS tradeshow held in Abu Dhabi from January 19th to 22nd, 2015. At its booth (n°8102, French Pavilion), it will display its technology and expertise to local professionals, in a bid to position itself on the Middle-Eastern market.   ALSOLEN acts as an Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) company in the field of solar power plants: it handles overall project engineering and performs case studies for the installation, manufacture, materials and components procurement, construction and turnkey completion of the entire facility.   ALSOLEN®’s product is a thermodynamic power plant using Fresnel mirror technology to concentrate sun raylights. Reflectors supporting self mechanically curved plane mirrors are lined up horizontally. By spinning simultaneously, the reflectors will concentrate sunlight into a line absorber containing thermal oil, the heat-transfer liquid used by ALSOLEN. This thermal oil is heated to 300°C, and the produced heat is then transferred via an exchanger to an Organic Rankine Cycle featuring a turbo-alternator that produces electric power. This technique is enjoying increased popularity, for the mirrors actually cost less than those used in parabolic reflectors.   ALSOLEN® concentrating solar power plants include thermal energy storage. Directly connected to the solar field, thermal storage will accumulate heat which is to be used later, in the evening, to continue producing energy. The basic, sturdy design thus makes it possible to size the storage capacity so as to recover the energy for a few hours in the evening, or even for the entire night.   ALSOLEN® concentrating solar power plants can simultaneously deliver a range of services: producing electricity up to 20MWe; supplying heat (up to 100MWth) from the solar field via exchangers, with a temperature adjustable to 300°C; producing cold or ice through an absorption cycle (several hundred kW); producing fresh water by desalinating seawater or brackish water (several hundred cubic metres daily).   ALSOLEN installations are especially suitable for off-grid settings, and they provide very low operating costs since no fossil energy is used. UVGERMI: Ultraviolet technology for water and air treatment

It acts on contaminants such as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), odours, viruses, bacteria and moulds.   GERMI R75 can be used in most environments: - Hospitals, doctor’s surgeries: to protect staff and patients against microbiological contaminants; - Offices: to protect staff and customers against microbiological contaminants and VOCs; - Manufacturing plants: mainly to eliminate VOCs, but also to protect against microbiological contaminants.   The purifier uses a combination of photocatalysis and UV sterilisation. The ambient air is drawn through a fine filter that traps the volatile particles. It then passes through a fibre coated with a photocatalytic substrate made from titanium oxide. Under the effect of the germicidal lamp the titanium oxide releases free radicals (OH), which are diffused in the area to be treated. These free radicals enable the immediate decomposition of the organic (VOCs) and micro-organic (bacteria, viruses, moulds) compounds by transforming them into basic molecules such as water and carbon dioxide. The action of the free radicals continues in the ambient air.   The second benefit of utilising a UV lamp is to use its germicidal power to increase the destruction of micro-organisms (bacteria, viruses and moulds).   Characteristics of the GERMI 75 air purifier:   -The air disinfection models comprise a body and a reflector made of food-grade stainless steel, thus ensuring good distribution of the UV rays. -They incorporate UV lamps with a lifespan of 7000 hrs. and highly UV-transparent quartz sleeves. -The disinfection cycles are programmed during installation and can vary from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the nature of the environment to be treated, the bacteriological reduction desired, and the bacteria and viruses present in the air. The module can be controlled by a safety switch, allowing it to be stopped at any time. -It can be installed in air circulation lines and air conditioners. Masdar in new carbon capture and storage research project

  Masdar today announced its collaboration with RTI International, an independent non-profit research institute, on a high potential carbon capture technology research project set to revolutionize the carbon capture and storage (CCS) space. The project will examine the use of solid sorbent technology for the capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) from coal and gas-fired power station flue gases, targeting a significant cost reduction in carbon dioxide capture over the best available technology today. The US Department of Energy (DoE) and Masdar are co-funding the innovative research in an agreement that sees Masdar provide an additional US$0.7 million in funding to the US Department of Energy’s core US$3-million budget. Bader Al Lamki, Associate Director of Masdar Carbon, explained: “Masdar Carbon is committed to the innovation and development of clean fossil fuel technologies aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions both locally and globally. We are excited to work with RTI International and the US Department of Energy on this innovative project which has the potential to revolutionize both the economics and technology of CCS practices.” In addition, Masdar Institute is working with RTI International to extend the research scope into the technology’s application for gas-fired power station flue gases. The DoE and Masdar signed an MOU in 2010 aimed at establishing a framework for mutually beneficial energy cooperation and various forms of collaboration in eight different areas including carbon capture technologies. RTI International has been a research partner of the DoE for over 25 years, with about 11 years of work in the field of carbon capture through a dedicated research and development team. Carbon capture and storage technology aims to capture carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere during the combustion of fossil fuels for power production or other industrial purposes. The captured carbon dioxide can then be transported via pipelines and sequestered in deep geological formations.
