From the moment the S.T.Dupont House was founded in 1872, Simon Tissot-Dupont magnified the finest and rarest of materials by producing luxurious accessories adorned with gold, diamonds, mother-of-pearl, Chinese lacquer or exotic leathers. Simon Tissot-Dupont originally founded a prestigious leather goods workshop, where he produced leather pieces bearing the initials of the elegant Parisian elite. As early as the 1920s, Simon’s sons André and Lucien Dupont were innovating; they created sumptuous, custom-made, travel trunks which quickly became a must-have among high society and royalty. In 1935, the Tissot-Dupont brothers hired a Russian lacquerer and S.T.Dupont became the custodian of a closely guarded secret: the process of applying Chinese lacquer to metal. Drawing on their expertise as a goldsmith, the trunk makers created the pocket gas lighter in 1941. The last trunk, in lavender blue morocco leather, was made in 1947 for Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen of England, to celebrate her wedding. In 1952, S.T.Dupont’s patented gas lighter proved hugely successful. The sound it made upon opening the lighter’s cap, the famous «Dupont cling», became a true trademark for the company. In 1973, S.T.Dupont created the first luxury ball point pen, which was beautifully streamlined and made of solid gold. A reference for its exceptional design, it was sold at the MoMA in New York. In 1976, S.T.Dupont went back to its roots and returned to its original heritage: leather goods craftsmanship. Today, S.T.Dupont’s luxurious accessories continue to call upon the finest materials and the rarest know-how, with the craftsmen constantly perfecting their unique and rare skills. To date, S.T.Dupont is the only House that has mastered the ancient technique of Chinese lacquering.
