Maison Gabriel Meffre

We have only to look back in time to see how the company has evolved since its beginnings as a small family business of just ten hectares of vines founded by Gabriel Meffre in 1936, and its spectacular rise to the status of "Négociant-Eleveur" in Gigondas, the prestigious title of "Négociant-Eleveur" that it still holds today. Almost 80 years on, the Gabriel Meffre Winery has become a leading regional winery in the production and commercialisation of fine wines from the Rhone Valley, Provence and Languedoc. The Gabriel Meffre name is now known not only in France but in more than 50 other countries.

The Gabriel Meffre Winery has the whole world in its sights (exports account for three quarters of its total sales), and was a pioneer in the creation of strong brands. It is also one of the first Rhone Valley wineries to have established close ties with winegrowers to create real partnerships, some of which have lasted to this day. Gabriel Meffre has always believed in being involved from the very earliest stages of the vine growing and winemaking processes thanks to its specially-dedicated team of agronomists and oenologists. In 2009, the Winery was taken over by Eric Brousse in association with the Maison Boisset in Burgundy. Today Eric Brousse, a well known figure in the world of wine, is CEO of Gabriel Meffre and he intends to guide the company as part of a long-term perspective and, with his team, he is developing an ambitious vision for Gabriel Meffre.

Needless to say, the Gigondas appellation has a special place amongst the Maison's wine references. The village remains the soul of the Winery and is its historic cradle. Some 400,000 bottles of Gigondas wine are produced per year and each vintage reflects the style of Gabriel Meffre, combining elegance and respect for the land and its traditions.

As well as being a Négociant-Eleveur, the Gabriel Meffre Winery also owns the Domaine de Longue Toque in the heart of the Gigondas vineyards and runs the Château Grand Escalion vineyard producing Costières de Nîmes AOC wines. A specially-dedicated team of oenologists works at these vineyards according to the principles of Sustainable Viticulture, recognised by the Terra Vitis label. They know the land extremely well and they vinify, blend and improve their vintages to get the very best out of them. Our teams approach their work with our winemaking partners with the same attention to detail in terms of quality. They visit the vineyards all year round to make sure that the qualitative demands of the Maison are being respected, according to the characteristics of the land and the grape varieties.
